Any possibility of making a Scene command that would scroll text down the screen like the opening "story" section?
On a seperate note, I am having a problem with my world, "Innsmouth". It seems that in some locations, people run into battles with no monsters, even though I have monsters placed on the map. I've set the links correctly, but still.. no monster/s.. Any idea what is wrong?
Thanks for all you've done already, Dan, and all that you're doing still for WoS :-)

Yes, I e-mailed him about the "no monster" fights that were triggered a LOT in Innsmouth. He didn't seem to have an answer though. I do remember it happening quite a ways back in Evergreen, but I don't know if there was ever an actual fix or if it just disappeared between one version and the next.

I am GUESSING that there is a link point which is the 'nearest' to you at that time and which is fundamentally causing it to happen, but that's just a guesseroo...
I suppose there could be other explanations... like somehow getting a monster placed on the map and then deleting that monster from the monster table or something like that...
And I think you answered another question for us, the "I wasn't actually inside of a monster circle, and yet I got into a fight anyway" question. I said that I punted with monster #1, but it appears I punt with the monster in the 'closest circle that you're not actually inside of'
The point being that it is always the link points which determine the probability of you getting pulled into a fight, the monster circles just control which monsters (and how many) you end up fighting.

Dan, what happens is that when you use the hunt button, sometimes to get into a fight which immediatly says "You've earned nothingfrom this battle" because no monsters appeared. Now I've looked at Darangen's main map for Innsmouth and all the links are set to Use Placed Monsters. He has the Evergreen groups.txt and there are a lot of empty groups but he's not using it on the maps.

that happens a lot in my world also... I had assumed that it was because my character was a cheat character but... I did place monsters that I later deleted from the monster book, but I put new monsters over them, and it was occuring everywhere, it would never ever let me hunt. it is blah.

OK, looks like I might just have been right.
WHAT I DID
I travelled to the coast to the left o the starting castle and parked myself inside that archer fish's circle.
I then got several "no monster" fights in a row.
I then followed one through the debugger and saw that it felt I was inside of a different circle, one with monster 22 in it.
I then checked the monster table - no monster 22.
=====
So, somehow a monster got placed, and then deleted from the monster table. The code continues to try use the placed monster but then can't find it when you enter the scene.
Also, since the monster isn't available, I can't paint the circle for "/monster" to let you know this is happening.
So, I was thinking about how to make 'broken' monster circles show up, but then I thought: why bother? Instead, I now just delete any such broken circle when I try to display it. So if you force this to happen (place monster, then delete from table), you will have the problem until the next time you run "/monster" on that map, at which time it should fix itself.

I don't know how to describe them...but here goes:
"could the originally np-chars that join you in a fight..."
[that part I understood -s]
"... with HP and attacking abilities have an effect on it?"
[but you lost me there. -s]
Of all the worlds i've played, Innsmouth is the first one that has implemented it. And also, is the only once that i've noticed that has a bad streak of the no monster fights. Just a thought, cuz I don't know much about world development. Never really tried. _MSJ_
[if your question were (samsyn makes up a question) "could an NPC which periodically helps you, actually increase in power each time you met them?" the answer would be "yes, sort of... create N identical NPCs with N different 'monster IDs' and make them different in the ways which make sense. Hence "Warrior Bill" could start off as a kid, re-appear strong, appear from time-travel from the future, appear weakened from some battle you just missed, get back to normal and marry your sister. -s]

[that's been on the list for a long time, but each time I start to implement it, something tells me it is a horrible mistake. (it makes sense in solo mode, but is just plain perverse in multiplayer mode... you want everyone to see it, you want them frozen in scene until it finishes maybe... you probably want all sorts of complicated special font controls, etc.) Then my brain hurts and I work on something else instead. I enjoy reading inspirational examples of how you would use the technology though... -s]
Also, a new idea.. Anyway you can make rings and amulets have the spell ability like the boots do? If not, how about a flag for boots that allows fast walking and passage over all terrain? I'd like to see both, but I could settle for one. I don't "think" it would be too hard to do, then again, i'm not much of a programmer...
['spell ability'? You mean "terrain ability" I bet! And yes, this is on the list already (don't know when) to basically let you set a bitmap instead of a single terrain/speed, and to let you bind it to any item such that it takes effect while equipped. So you could be wearing the GAS MASK (thanks for the example... um... Jacius? Merlin?.. um.. sorry) which lets you cross gassy terrain, the "ring of Floating" the "Boat Shield" and the "amulet of fast paced-ness" all at the same time. Or the Soul Boots which do it all at once. Maybe this will make it in A55. -s]
Thanks again!

Doesn't sound like a bad idea. But I'd still like to see a scrolling text in the long run, for and ending sort of thing mainly. Since you see scrolling text at the beginning... why not see it at the end? Just a long term idea, I can use the CUT scene command for now :-)
Thanks Merlin!

Dan, what I meant to say was, some NPCs join you, such as in Aerianell, a woman joins you, and is in your camp and your battles, but she does nothing, what I was talking about, are the ones that DO help you. I didn't know if that being in the world could effect the random fights or something, just a thought. =) _MSJ_
